Today Rabbit and I discovered the farmer's market at 175th St in Washington Heights.  It runs the length of the block between Broadway and Wadsworth, and it's open on Thursdays during the summer and fall, which means it's full of Spanish-speaking grandmothers.  Many of the signs are in Spanish, too.  We learned that "libra" is how you say "pound" in Spanish - it must be something similar in Latin, which would explain that mysterious "lb" abbreviation!

Anyway, this farmer's market is pretty small, but they still had a fairly large selection of vegetables.  There was also a bread stand that we did not check out at all.  And supposedly there is a fish man, but we did not see him, perhaps because we got there after 2 pm.  Rabbit and I bought kale, purslane, onions, garlic and a cucumber.  We then made kale quinoa patties for dinner.  They are just like meatballs with no meat!  Here's the recipe:

Quinoa Patties

Olive oil
Chili flakes
1 smallish white onion
2 cloves of minced garlic
4 cups chopped kale
2 1/2 cups cooked quinoa
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup grated Parmigiano
3 large eggs, beaten
3/4 cup smashed crackers (bread crumbs)

Dice up the onion and kale, mince the garlic.  Cook some chili flakes, onion and garlic in some olive oil at medium heat for about three minutes, then toss in the kale and cook until it's bright green and soft.

Mix the quinoa, salt, Parmigiano and eggs.  Add the kale to the quinoa and mix in the bread crumbs.  Form into patties (about 1/2 cup per patty).  Add enough oil to coat the bottom of a cast iron skillet and fry the patties 5 minutes on each side over medium heat.

Place the cooked patties on some paper towels to soak up the excess oil, and then enjoy!

This recipe makes about 10 patties.

We ate these over a bed of purslane, which is supposed to be a Super Food!  I recommend getting the kind that doesn't have the roots still attached, or it is mostly just a Super Big Pain to Clean.

Rabbit approves of this recipe.
